In addition, we appreciate you sharing your ideas for improvement and will take your recommendations into consideration when planning next year's program. Feel free to send any additional ideas to consumers@odwalla.com and we'll make sure they are shared with the appropriate program manager. Thanks Steve.

Re: What are the real motives behind the 12,000% alcohol tax?

I want to know what the Whitney's have been smoking and were can I get some? This is the most idiotic thing I have ever read. They will single handedly ruin the wine industry in California, put thousands and thousands people out of work, the increase in crime alone would bankrupt our state further. You people our idiots.

Re: What are the real motives behind the 12,000% alcohol tax?

I wonder how the Whitney's will react ot the dramatic increase in crime when "bootleggers" bring alcohol in from other states to sell under the table. That's what started Al Capone's rackets and that's how old Joe Kennedy made his fortune (supplying Canadian booze to the mob).

Re: What are the real motives behind the 12,000% alcohol tax?

I am curious about whether any of it will turn out to be true. I think it has been well established that Kent and Josie Whitney are from San Diego, but I have yet to get any confirmation about their link to 21st Century Wellness Initiative, or even what the company does. I have sent an email requesting additional information but have not heard back.

This particular situation though really shines a light on the problems of the California proposition system for creating laws. The system tends to create a bunch of knee jerk, special purpose laws that have unintended consequences on other areas of government and that compound over time.

Re: What are the real motives behind the 12,000% alcohol tax?

Thanks for this info...I was wondering just who was behind this massive alcohol tax.

Re: Our Day in Television

Wow - sounds like a great day!!

Re: Common Misconceptions about the State Park Access Pass program

No I don't agree, primarily because the choice isn't to close all the parks, it is to cut off general fund money to the state park system.

Once that is done it will be up to the managers of the state parks to determine the best course of action to reduce spending and to identify other sources of funding, including increasing usage fees. I keep hearing people in support of this saying that they have no problem with paying $15 for an annual pass, but that means they have no problem forcing everyone else to do the same. Would you be willing to pay $30 for the same privilege? $150?

The assumption put forth by the California State Parks Foundation is that the state park system must be funded at a certain level or it can't exist. This is simply not true. We need a healthy state park system, and if that means a smaller state park system then so be it. But what we really need is a flexible state park system that can respond to budget pressures year after year by adjusting its spending to match the income the state receives.

I certainly am not stating that we must keep all of the parks open, I am arguing that putting the parks as a special interest opens the door for every other special interest to do the same with the result of massively increasing state spending.

Re: Common Misconceptions about the State Park Access Pass program

Is the current offering a perfect solution for the state parks? No, probably not. But it's definitely a vast improvement on the previous solution of "let's just close everything," wouldn't you agree?

It is impossible for California to maintain current services or even fractions of current services without increasing taxes or fees. It's exactly that kind of "I want all the presents but don't want to pay for them," along with our long-abused proposition system, that got this state into its current budget situation.

Re: Email: No, Disqus: Maybe

Welcome to DISQUS!

Re: Email: No, Disqus: Maybe

Steve ( I hope I got your name right?),

Since reviewing the ShareThis widget, I have actually switched to on most of my blogs to AddThis instead.

AddThis have improved dramatically their reporting, but I think now it is more the preference than anything. I have said in my previous comments here and elsewhere that it's just a matter of time before Google attempts to buy Twitter. But yes, you are right - it's a bit late in the game for them, especially with the value of Twitter going through the roof. I am sure they will pay much more this time. Who knows - this could be a sale that will be more than YouTube.com. Who knows? Depends on whether the Twitter boys are desperate for money or not.

Re: Media, meet Social Media

Wow, that was fast... thanks for the feedback. We missed the embedded media thing in testing and can't seem to replicate the behavior of not submitting the Tweat. We will find it if it is there.

We've deployed a temporary fix that will make share this usable with embedded media. While using "pop up" works (can you say ugly) its our preference to go back to IFRAME as soon as possible.

Having share this on a Conversation With San Diego is going to be in place when we deploy 2.93 next week. I'll have to save this story for a time when we can share a beer over WordPress war stories :-) -K

Re: Community: SDNN vs NCTimes

Since my blog is based on Wordpress, the same software being used by SDNN, posts on my blog that link to SDNN stories are automatically submitted as comments at SDNN. However at this point these comments are only displayed on posts in the A Conversation with San Diego section and not in the stories section. You will see a discrepancy in the number of comments actually displayed and the number of comments indicated at the top of the story. This is actually being accentuated by posts on A Conversation with San Diego that link back to stories (see the 8 Greats). Because of the decision to use two separate blogs the Conversation posts are link to the stories posts as comments.

Re: Community: SDNN vs NCTimes

You were able to comment using existing online persona?
